if

In the Holy Scriptures, “IF” is a small word that carries covenant gravity.  It is how GOD speaks to HIS creation who can choose: trust or unbelief, hearing or hardening, obedience or rebellion.  In TORAH, in the prophets, and through YESHUA (Messiah) and Apostles, “If” invites us to live by faithful allegiance so that we genuinely receive what GOD delights and promises (Blessings) to give us and avoid what HE warns against (curses).

Journey Members,

The Bread of Haste Ministry (BHM)

Dear Journey Members,

For this Journey Message we have chosen the word “if” (אִם in Hebrew pronounced eem).

In the Hebrew Bible (TANAKH), the word אִם (eem) is highly versatile.  It most commonly translates to "if," but depending on the literary context, it can also signify a statement of fact meaning "since," or introduce a plea meaning "if only.”

In the Scriptures, the word "if" appears over 1,600 times and typically acts as a conditional particle.  It represents free will and signifies that a consequence or promise depends on a specific choice or action (obedience/faith).

AI Overview-Definition:

“IF" is a subordinating conjunction used to introduce a condition, supposition, or hypothetical situation.  It establishes that an event or result is dependent on specific circumstances happening first.

Dictionary.com:

As a Conjunction

  • In case that; granting or supposing that; on condition that.

  • Even though.

  • Whether.

  • Used to introduce an exclamatory phrase.

  • When or whenever. \

As a Noun

  • A supposition; uncertain possibility.

  • A condition, requirement, or stipulation.

Throughout the Scriptures, “if” marks the fork in the road of covenant life.  It signals conditions, invitations, and warning: “If you listen and obey (Shema) and walk in GOD’S ways, then blessings; if you rebel, then consequences (curses).”  Used by Moses, the Prophets, and YESHUA (Messiah) and HIS Apostles, “If” is how Scripture calls us to choose faith-fueled obedience, not to “earn salvation,” but to abide in GOD’S covenant and enjoy HIS promises.

“IF” in Scripture -  What “If” does in Scripture:

  • Covenant conditions: “If you obey…then GOD will (EXO 19:5-6; DEU 28; LEV 26)

  • Wisdom patterns:  “If you seek then you will understand/receive (PRO 2:1-5).

  • Diagnostic Test:  “If we confess and HE forgives” or “If anyone says and yet does not  (1JHN 1:9; 1 JHN 2:4).

  • Rhetorical wishes or appeals:  “If only MY people would listen and obey (compare PSA 81:13-14).

These uses all press the same point: choices have real consequences before GOD, and HIS promises meet us on the path of faith and obedience, not disobedience and rebellion.

Covenant - Blessing and Curses “IF”:

At Sinai, GOD framed Israel’s (mixed-multitude) identity with an “If”:

  • Now therefore, “if” you will indeed obey MY voice and keep MY covenant, then you shall be MY treasured possession…a kingdom of priests and a holy nation (EXO 19:5-6).

  • Deuteronomy gathers many such “Ifs”:  “If” you diligently obey ME…all these blessings will come upon you, and, conversely, “if” you will not obey and observe the commandments which “I AM” giving you today, then all following curses will be yours in abundance (DEU 28:15).  Also, see blessings and curses (Deuteronomy Chapter 28).

  • Leviticus 26 follows the same covenant pattern-blessings for covenant faithfulness; escalating discipline for covenant breach.

  • The Temple dedication echoes it:  “If” MY people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray…then I will hear…forgive…heal (2 CHR 7:14).  The prophets later apply the same “if” to calls for return/repentance (HEB 7:3-7), showing that “if” is the grammar of covenant relationship.

  • The heart of the matter is relationship:  GOD offers life and blessings; “if” asks whether we will love HIM back by hearing and obeying (Shema), DEU 30:14-20.

YESHUA and the Apostles keep the “If”:

YESHUA speaks with the same covenant cadenced authority. “If you love ME, you will keep MY Commandments (JHN 14:15).  “If you keep MY Commandments, you will abide in MY love, just as I have kept my FATHER’S Commandments (JHN 15:10).  HE ends the sermon on the mount with an “If” that divides wise and foolish: everyone then who hears these words of MINE and does them will be like a wise man…”; the one who “hears and does not do them” collapses (MAT 7:24-27).  The Apostles apply “if” both as a promise and as a test:

  • Promise: “If we confess our sins, HE is faithful and just to forgive us (1 JHN 1:9).

  • Assurance/identity: “If you confess with your mouth that YESHUA is The Messiah and believe in your heart GOD raised HIM from the dead, you WILL be saved (ROM 10:9).

  • Endurance:  “We have come to share in MESSIAH, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end” (HEB 3:14).

  • Obedience Test:  By this we know that we have come to know HIM, if we keep HIS Commandments” (1 JHN 2:3).

None of these uses makes obedience the cause of salvation; they make obedience the FRUIT and evidence of a living faith

Grace and conditions - not opposites:

In the Holy Scriptures “If” does not cancel out GOD’S Grace; it magnifies how grace trains us through faith and obedience for good works” (EPH 2:8-10).  Grace teaches us to renounce lawlessness (without TORAH) and to live self-controlled, upright, and righteous lives as people of GOD, zealous for good works (TIT 2:11-14).   The TORAH and the New/Renewed Covenant agree.  GOD set life and death before us; “If” calls us to choose life by loving GOD, hearing HIS voice, and clinging to HIM (DEU 30:19-20).  “If” is not wages language; it is relationship language.  Because GOD has acted first in mercy, our responses-repentance, trust, obedience-position us to receive what HE delights to give/fulfill, HIS promises to us.  Those who are the called according to HIS purposes (Pauls message to the believers in Rome; ROM 8:28).

Our Journey Message - “IF”

A short, powerful two letter word with covenant implications.  Anchored in TORAH, all of GOD’S covenants and our salvation are hinged to this tiny little word.  All the prophets and Apostles spoke of and lived the “if” lifestyle and WILL receive the blessings GOD promised.  GOD “personally” revealed the “If” to Israel (Mixed-multitude) at the mountain of GOD and to us (those who have been grafted into the natural olive tree) and it is our responsibility to live the “If” lifestyle GOD has Commanded us to live.

Our journey in religion removed/hid and confused the “If” and taught us that Jesus did it all and that we are at “liberty” to rebel/sin against GOD by disobeying HIS Commandments.  From not observing GOD’S Commanded, anointed and appointed holy days (seven day sabbath, feast/festival days, to dietary commandments)…”grace” covers our continuous disobedience/rebellion against GOD.

Whatever happened to “not a jot…nor a tittle…until heaven and earth have passed away (MAT 5:17-19).  Well family…the earth is still here and the heavens haven’t passed away…therefore the Commandments of GOD (ALL OF THEM), still stand, apply, and in full effect today!

We had to “unlearn” all the religious theology, denominational myths and practices, lies, false teachers and teachings passed on from generation to generation, and even our own personal theology (opinion based theology) to find the “Truth of the Gospel of the Kingdom of GOD”.  The very truth that our Rabbi YESHUA (Messiah) taught and preached in the first century before it was corrupted by Rome and before it took on the persona of pagan undertone and practices passed down from Babylon to present day.  NO…it's not okay…NO “grace" does not provide a perpetual covering for blatant rebellion against GOD; If it did…that would make GOD a liar.

According to the Holy Scriptures, God is not a liar; in fact, scripture explicitly states that it is impossible for God to lie.  This concept is directly expressed in Numbers 23:19, which says, "God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind:

  • Hebrews 6:18: Declares that it is "impossible for God to lie", offering strong encouragement and a trustworthy anchor for believers.

  • Titus 1:2: Refers to "God, who cannot lie" and who promised eternal life before the beginning of time.

  • 2 Timothy 2:13: States that even if humans are faithless, God remains faithful because "he cannot deny himself.

We hope and pray that this Journey Message will give you pause and courage to cause you to dig deeper into the Holy Scripture and study and explore the “If” in the Holy Scriptures.  GOD thundered down the “If” to Israel (Mixed-multitude) as they stood in the presence of GOD and looked in fear and awe of HIS awesome and terrible presence.  GOD thunders the same “IF” to us today, our responsibility is to “trust and obey”! SHALOM!
