commiSSION

In the Bible, a commission is a divine charge, command/commandment, or authority given by GOD to an individual or group to carry out a specific task or mission.  It involves empowering someone to perform duties on behalf of GOD, most notably what is referred to as the "Great Commission" in Matthew 28:19–20, where YESHUA commanded His disciples to make disciples of all nations.

Journey Members,

The Bread of Haste Ministry (BHM)

Dear Journey Members,

Key aspects of commission in the Holy Scriptures include:

  • Divine Authority: It is a call initiated by GOD, requiring individuals to "go".  It is characterized by the assurance of GOD’S presence and power, not human tradition.

  • The Great Commission: YESHUA’S command to His disciples (recorded in the testimonies of Matthew 28:18-20, Mark 16:15, Luke 24:46-48, John 20:21, and Acts 1:8) to spread the gospel of the Kingdom of GOD, baptize, and teach.

  • Examples: Moses was commissioned to lead Israel (Exodus 3), and Paul was commissioned to be an apostle to the Gentiles (Acts 26).

  • Sin of Commission: In a different context, a "sin of commission" is a sin committed by taking action to disobey God's Commandments (e.g., TORAH).

A commission in the Bible signifies that followers of YESHUA are commanded and empowered to act as His representatives (Apostles), fulfilling GOD’S purpose for HIS creation.

COMMISSION (Merriam Webster):

  • A formal written warrant granting the power to perform various acts or duties

  • A certificate conferring military rank and authority also, the rank and authority so conferred

  • An authorization or command to act in a prescribed manner or to perform prescribed acts

  • A formal request to produce something (especially an artistic work) in exchange for payment

  • Authority to act for, in behalf of, or in place of another

  • A task or matter entrusted to one as an agent for another

  • A group of persons directed to perform some duty

  • An act of entrusting or giving authority

We are sent to proclaim the Gospel of the Kingdom of God, the exact same Gospel that YESHUA taught calling people to repent, trust GOD and do everything HE commanded us to do.  Because YESHUA taught and upheld TORAH, the Great Commission includes training disciples in covenant faithfulness (obedience), not a reduced message that separates grace from obedience.

What YESHUA Taught:  The Gospel of the Kingdom of God [not the gospel /traditions of men):

YESHUA announced the “good news of the Kingdom of GOD”, and called all to repentance.  The Kingdom message is more than forgiveness; it is about GOD’S reign (HIS WILL) breaking in through YESHUA, restoring people to covenant life so they may live in accordance with GOD’S instructions (TORAH) by the power of The Holy Spirit of GOD (Jer 31:31-33, Ezk 36:26-27.

In the Great Commission, YESHUA commands to “make disciples of all nations, teaching them to obey all that HE had commanded (Mat 28:18-20).  What HE commanded is consistent with TORAH (Mat 5:17-19). Therefore, discipleship is not only about a moment of belief; it is a life-long apprenticeship (Journey) into GOD’S ways.

What the Apostles taught:

After HIS resurrection, YESHUA opened the Scriptures and showed that “GOD’S Torah and the Prophets and the Psalms“ all foretold of The Messiah, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins (see definition of sin (1 John 3:4), would be proclaimed in HIS name to all nations (Luk 24: 44-47).  That is the Kingdom message going global.

How TORAH undergirds the Great Commission:

TORAH sets establishes the pattern: Israel was called to be a kingdom of priest to the nations (Exodus 19:5-6) so the nations would see, understand, observe, and obey GOD’S commandments, see HIS wisdom and walk in HIS ways (Deu 4:5-8). TORAH commands diligent teaching-first at home (Deu 6:4-9) and publicly every seventh year to all including the sojourner so all would learn to fear GOD (Deu 31:10-13).  TORAH also anticipates inclusion of the nations within the covenant community: “ One statue shall be for you and the sojourner” (Num 15:15-16) see also (Exo 12 48:-49).  The prophets expand this: “the Servant is a light to the nations” (Isa 49:6); the nation will stream to ZION saying, He will teach us HIS ways,” for out of Zion shall go forth TORAH (Isa 2:2-3).

The great Commission is the Messiah’s royal sending that brings these TORAH-and-Prophets pattern to their fulfillment: the nations are invited  into GOD’S covenant through YESHUA, taught to OBEY the KING’S instruction (TORAH), and empowered by The Holy Spirit of GOD, to walk them out (Jer 31:31-33, Ezk 36:26-27).

Our Journey Message - Commission (Hospital Ministry):

A month ago, 24 hours following what was supposed to be a routine medical procedure, I found myself in the emergency room with a fever of 105 degrees and other complications which my wife and I could not explain.

After checking into the emergency room, I was immediately admitted into the hospital and found myself in for a three day stay.  Everything happened so quickly.  We had know idea what was going on or why this was happening.

Immediately, the hospital staff began multiple test, continuous blood-work, round the clock blood pressure monitoring, medication every four hours to include other “unpleasantries” that went along with the visit; but, through it all my trusty “side-kick,” my Wife, my “Zipporah (pronounced Tzi-po-rah or in Hebrew:  צִפּוֹרָה)” (reference to Moses wife), was by my side.  Sleeping in chairs, hovering over me like an eaglet fearlessly hovers over her young.  Constantly in prayer with the ONE (GOD), who is omnipresent.

Okay…back to the “unanticipated” three day stay.  The third day carried us over into the seventh day (Sabbath/Shabbat), GOD’S commanded weekly appointed day (Moed/moedim in Hebrew).  We quickly informed our hospital caretakers that we as the obedient of GOD, observe the seventh day Shabbat. Shocking to us, the reaction was amazing (blessing), as the attending staff immediately went into accommodation mode and was prepared to support our faith requirements for the observance.  Today, in a world so full of hate, it was refreshing (a blessing) to see and feel the genuineness of the hospital staff.

We kindly thanked the hospital staff and informed them that we had all we needed to observe the seventh day Shabbat…thanks to my wife and ensured them that they could continue care throughout the observance.

What we didn’t realize is that the interest in our faith by the hospital staff would be overwhelming.  We were asked countless questions about our faith and soon realized that we were supposed to be exactly where GOD wanted/needed us to be.

As the time for the Sabbath arrived (Sunset Friday to Sunset Saturday), we began our normal observance in the hospital. As we read/studied the Holy Scriptures together, as we normally do, we (my wife) found ourselves reading to hospital staff.  The response was “mind-blowing.”  We had know idea that people were so hungry for the truth of the Gospel of the Kingdom of GOD, the same truth Yeshua taught ‘first to the Jew and then to the gentile…not the traditions of men (religion).  We soon realized that it may not have been the most pleasant situation to be in (especially for me); however, it was exactly where GOD wanted/needed us to be!  We were reminded of our “Commission/Commandment” responsibility in a way that we never expected but, we also realized that walking in GOD’S will requires obedience to all HE Commands.  GOD still commands us today.  He doesn’t ask us for our opinion or our personal or denominational theology, and though we have choice, obedience opens the doors for HIS blessings…disobedience requires judgment.  For the wages of sin…are still death but the gift of GOD is life everlasting.  Yes, Rabbi Yeshua and HIS Jewish disciples in the first century were TORAH observant/obedient followers.  They lived, walked and talked the word/instructions (TORAH) of GOD which is the authoritative source of the Tanahk (Old Testament) and the Brit Hadashah (New Testament).

We hope this journey message inspires you to stop…and take a renewed, deep dive into the Holy Scriptures and discover who GOD really is and HIS intent for your life.  SHALOM!
