FITNESS
Spiritual fitness: In Scripture, fitness defined as training in Godliness-learning to love GOD with all your heart which means all that we are and, to keep HIS Commandments. Physical fitness has great value, but Godliness benefits for all things (1 TIM 4:7-8). Yes, caring for the body including eating clean according to LEV 11 and DEU 14, is part of TORAH obedience and stewardship, but spiritual fitness is desired/commanded by GOD. A life shaped by Rabbi Yeshua (Messiah), TORAH (GOD’S Instructions) written on our hearts and the daily practice of covenant faithfulness.

Journey Members,
The Bread of Haste Ministry (BHM)
Dear Journey Members,
TORAH is the unified standard for “righteous living.” Scripture does not divide it into moral versus ceremonial versus civil categories in order to cancel portions of it. Our Rabbi YESHUA upheld and fulfilled TORAH and taught us to keep and teach even the least of HIS Father’s Commandments.
Our Rabbi YESHUA (Messiah) commanded us to “seek first the kingdom of God” (MAT 6:33). This command applies to all aspects of our life. No pursuit should be made an idol. We shouldn't love anything, including our bodies and physical fitness, more than we love GOD.
For this Journey message, we chose the Hebrew word Gevurah (גְּבוּרָה gev-voo-RAH) represents inner strength, spiritual courage, and moral discipline.
Definitions of Fitness. Although there are many definitions of fitness, provided are just a few:
Websters: The quality or state of being fit; the capacity of an organism to survive and transmit its genotype to reproductive offspring as compared to competing organisms also; the contribution of an allele or genotype to the gene pool of subsequent generations as compared to that of other alleles or genotypes.
CDC: Fitness is the ability to perform daily tasks with energy, strength, and ease without undue fatigue. It is a state of overall well-being achieved through regular physical activity, proper nutrition, and adequate rest, encompassing both health-related and skill-related components.
AI Overview: The five health-related components of physical fitness are cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition. A well-rounded fitness routine incorporates exercises for each of these areas to ensure optimal health, reduce injury risk, and boost overall daily functioning.
Spiritual Fitness:
-
The goal: Godliness-becoming the kind of people who love GOD first and foremost and your neighbor (DEU 6:5; MAT 22:37-40).
-
The training: Disciplined habits that produce holiness overtime. Paul in his first epistle to Timothy, contrast limited bodily training with training in Godliness “first,” which profits in every way (1 TIM 4:7-8).
-
The power source: The renewed/New Covenant promise. “GOD gives us a new heart and new Spirit so we can walk in HIS statutes/commandments (JER 31:31-33; EZE 36:26-27)
-
The fruit: Transformed life marked by love, joy, shalom, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and my “personal” favorite, self-control (GAL 5:22-23)
Spiritual fitness is not abstract mysticism; it is covenant faithfulness, heart, mind, body, schedule, resources, words, actions, behavior and relationships aligned with GOD’S instructions (TORAH).
Physical Fitness and TORAH:
-
Our bodies matter to GOD. Our bodies are to be presented to HIM as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to HIM (ROM 12:1-2; 1 COR 6:19-20). Physical fitness is valuable but subordinate to godliness. We steward sleep, movement, and strength so we can love GOD and serve people as HE Commanded.
-
TORAH practices support both Spiritual and bodily health: weekly rest from Sunset Friday to Sunset Saturday (Shabbat, DEU 5), refreshes the body and soul; GOD’S appointed/annointed times (MOEDIM), orient our lives toward worship and community (EXO 20: 8-11 and LEV 23).
-
Dietary Commandments. Clean/unclean foods (LEV 11; DEU 14). Instructions (TORAH) that guide GOD’S people today. They were never just about health, but obedience brings blessings. Avoiding unclean foods is both an act of holiness and wise stewardship.
Core practices that train Godliness:
-
Studying Scripture: Meditation and obedience (PSA 119:9, JOS 1:8 and JAM 1:22).
-
Prayer: Consistent, honest communion with GOD. Private and simple as our Rabbi YESHUA taught (MAT 6:5-13; LUK 18:1).
-
Fasting: Not as a show but to HUMBLE ourselves, seek GOD and loosen the bonds of evil and wickedness; true fasting joins personal repentance with mercy and justice (MAT 6:16-18; ISA 58).
-
Community: Love your neighbor, meet, encourage, correct, teach and serve one another in love, confession, and accountability are “Spiritual weight-training” that builds endurance and stamina (HEB 10:24-25; JAM 5:16).
-
Mouth discipline: Let NO corrupt talk proceed out of your mouth; guard the heart, from it flows the springs of life (EPH 4:29; PRO 4:23).
-
Giving and mercy: Generously, trains our hearts away from GREED and toward GOD (MAT 6:1-4; DEU 15:1-11).
-
Repentance as a lifestyle: When we stumble, we confess “immediately,” and turn; GOD is faithful to forgive and to restore (1 JHN 1:9; PRO 28:13).
Our Journey Message - Fitness:
My wife is a multi-disciplined fitness instructor who has been leading fitness sessions for more than 40 years. It doesn’t matter the fitness format…she is certified to lead it. What sets her fitness sessions apart is that she has a deep love for physical fitness training but more importantly, a greater love for GOD and for people. Her passion for people is infectious, she loves everybody and treats everyone with equal enthusiasm, dignity and respect. Everyone is special in her fitness sessions, everyone is family. Birthdays, pregnancies, promotions, departures, marriages or deaths, all are recognized, celebrated or mourned together, not as a member of a fitness class, but as a member of a family!
As we have grown closer to GOD in our walk (Our Journey), her fitness sessions have taken on a more Spiritual energy. She has discovered that her love for people transcends the corporate, run-of-the-mill fitness industry. An industry that mass produces ego’s and a false sense of what fitness is meant to be. Gone are the days of real sincere one-on-one teaching, coaching and mentoring fitness sessions, exchanged for the everyone needs to look like me and be as fit as I am mentality. A self-centered mentality permeates the fitness industry today. If you don’t look like me…if you can’t keep up, then maybe you shouldn’t be in this fitness session “mentality.”
My wife has always had a close walk with GOD; although, not fully understanding what GOD actually required until now (See ECC 12:13-14, what GOD requires). She now loves GOD the way HE defines love and commands love (JHN 14:15)!
True love for God is not just an emotional feeling or “lip-service,” but an active choice to follow HIS Commandments. It is a lifestyle, a walk (fitness) of faith, an invitation to align your life with HIS will out of devotion rather than forced obligation or fear, and with obedience comes HIS Blessings. In Malachi 3:10, GOD promises to "open the windows of heaven" and pour out abundant blessings in exchange for faithfulness. Her fitness sessions now reflect the love of GOD as she shares her walk of faith and the Gospel of the Kingdom of GOD with her fitness “mafia.” Yes, the “Gospel of the Kingdom of GOD,” not the kingdom of man/religion (the traditions of men).
Physical fitness is important to GOD; however, Spiritual fitness is the single most important priority GOD Expects/Commands of righteous, faithfulness and set-apart living (MAT 6:33).
Spiritual fitness is training in godliness, a whole-life response to GOD’S grace that learns, loves, and loves HIS TORAH. Physical fitness to include clean eating (dietary commandments) are good and belong within covenant stewardship, but the center is obedience flowing from a new heart: prayer, Scripture, repentance, community, mercy, unshakable joy and faithfulness to GOD and to HIS people. My wife continues to display her love for GOD and for people through her fitness consulting business 8:28 Fitness LLC. Truly, “all things work together for good, of those who LOVE GOD, those who are called according to HIS purpose (ROM 8:28).
Please continue to join us on our journey of faith; but, more importantly, please joins us as we observe the last of GOD’S Spring anointed/appointed holy days (MOEDIM), Shavuot (Pentecost). SHALOM!
